Indian authorities have made four arrests in connection to the leaking of episode 4 (The Spoils of War) of Game of Thrones season 7. Those accused include former and current employees of a Mumbai based firm, Prime Focus Technologies, which manages data for Star India (HBO’s distribution partner). The four have been found in violation of Indian Information Technology Act of 2000 and are charged with ‘criminal breach of trust and computer-related offenses. They are being detained until August 21. , pending further investigation. Star India released the following statement in response to the arrests:
“We are deeply grateful to the police for their swift and prompt action. We believe that valuable intellectual property is a critical part of the development of the creative industry and strict enforcement of the law is essential to protecting it.”
‘The Spoils of War’ leaked 2 days before it was scheduled to air on HBO and the leaked copy came with a ‘Star India Private Limited’ watermark. This case is unrelated to the cyberattack on HBO by unknown hackers.
