HBO conducted an Online Fantasy Game of Thrones Election spanning the last 4 weeks to see who was more popular and who the Game of Thrones universe wanted to see on the Iron Throne. A whopping 1,666,642 votes were cast. The Election was styled in the U.S Presidential Election style. Each candidate had a running mate. Following were the nominees:
- Daenerys Targaryen (With Tyrion Lannister as Running Mate)
- Jon Snow (With Lyanna Mormont as Running Mate)
- Peter “Littlefinger” Baelish (With Sansa Stark as Running Mate)
- Cersei Lannister (With Qyburn as Running Mate)
Cersei Lannister and her running mate Qyburn seemed to be the least effective pairing as they could garner only 2% of the total votes. Both Littlefinger and Daenerys had 32% each of the total votes and in the first 2 weeks, Littlefinger and his running mate Sansa were leading. But by the end of the final week, the 998th Lord Commander of The Night’s Watch and his running mate Lyanna Mormont had received the majority (35%) of the total votes. Hence, Jon Snow won the elections with a thin margin but he won it none the less.
This election also highlights the fact that Game of Thrones fandom is almost equally divided among Jon, Daenerys and Littlefinger when it comes to choosing the ruler for the realm, which should make things very interesting for the upcoming season of the show.
