theon looks at yara the broken manGame of Thrones showrunner David Benioff reflects¬†on Yara and Theon Greyjoy’s conversation in the last episode:

“Yara does love Theon and one could argue that she is the only one who’s ever really loved him. Yara has always been there for him. She’s the only person who tried to rescue him when he was Ramsay’s prisoner.”

Yara tells Theon that if he has lost all the hope of coming back, he should ‘take a knife and cut’ his wrists. Benioff adds that he¬†needed this ‘brutal therapy’ from his sister and we should look forward to seeing more of ‘old Theon’ in the upcoming episodes:

“It’s a very tough love though.. Yara is not a therapist and she is not there to tell him to ‘buck up and everything’s gonna be okay’. It’s a pretty brutal kind of therapy but that’s who they are. I mean they are essentially a Viking People. There’s not a lot of room for soft and gentle psychology. I think it’s the kind of tough love that Theon needed at this point. And when he finally raises his eyes and looks into her eyes, we see a glimpse of the old Theon that had been lost for so long.”
