olly hangs behind the sceneWith the advancements in visual effects these days, everyone probably assumed that execution of Olly, Ser Alliser Thorne and other mutineers was all CGI. But it wasn’t and the actors were literally hung in that scene. Director Dan Sackheim explains in the behind the scenes featurette:

“Yeah, we did really drop them. It’s always kind of chilling because your initial reaction is visceral. They’re in these harnesses that drop and it is a little bit of a shock to the system.”

Though they were safe and completely monitored during the filming, it must feel pretty frightening- like when you are about to fall down from a height during an amusement ride. Olly actor Brenock O’Connor agrees:

“The first time feeling that drop and the noise of the barrels being pulled back is terrifying when you’re standing above it. It feels so real and that adds to the ability to act terrified during the scene.”

Game of Thrones showrunner David Benioff explains what executing them meant for Jon:

“It all comes back to Ned Stark; the man who passes the sentence swings the sword, it’s the northern ethos. Jon really doesn’t want to do this, but the justice of if it is clear – these men assassinated the Lord Commander, they need to be executed.”
