Season 6 might be the final time Game of Thrones gets 10 episodes. Speaking to Variety, showrunner David Benioff revealed that they only have story worth 13 more episodes after season 6, which means seasons 7 and 8 may have 7 and 6 episodes respectively:
“I think we’re down to our final 13 episodes after this season. We’re heading into the final lap. That’s the guess, though nothing is yet set in stone, but that’s what we’re looking at.”
Co-creator Dan Weiss added that a shorter run for the last 2 seasons will help them spend more time per episode and it is difficult for them to produce 10 episodes in a 12-14 month timeframe:
“It’s crossing out of a television schedule into more of a mid-range movie schedule”.
It has been long speculated that Game of Thrones season 8 will be the show’s last. This news may anger fans as they were expecting the usual 10 episodes per season for the final two. However, sources indicate that these numbers are still premature as D&D are just starting to outline their plans for future seasons and only time will tell how many episodes per season we end up getting.
