Game of Thrones teased a battle sequence in season 6 trailer and writer Bryan Cogman thinks that this will be biggest battle in the history of television:
“It’s definitely the biggest [action sequence yet]. We’ve always wanted to get to a place – story-wise and budget-wise and time-wise and resource-wise – where we would be able to do a proper battle, with one army on one side, one army on another side.”
Showrunner Dan Weiss adds:
“We wondered, ‘Why don’t you see more fully fleshed-out battles in movies and TV. Then you get into the nitty-gritty of what it takes to actually shoot these things in a way that isn’t just helter-skelter chaos but actually gives you a sense of battle geography and the ebb and flow, and you realize why.”
The sequence will be part of an episode directed by Miguel Sapochnik, who also directed the critically acclaimed Hardhome episode which showed white walkers in full glory, and co-creator David Benioff is all praises for Sapochnik:
“Miguel did such a fantastic job with ‘Hardhome’ we thought we should bring him back – this time with horses. Horses are not easy, at all. And certainly in terms of numbers – number of extras, number of stuntmen, number of shooting days – it’s the biggest we’ve done.”
** Spoilers and speculation ahead **
Game of Thrones writers of course didn’t divulge any details on who will be part of this battle but if sources are to be believed, it will be between Starks and Boltons (and their allies) with the former led by resurrected Jon Snow, fighting to reclaim the north. At least 2 major characters are rumored to die in this battle.
GOT returns April 24 9 pm on HBO.
