Hit HBO fantasy show Game of Thrones has developed quite a huge fan following over the last 6 years. In fact, the show was the most discussed TV series on Facebook this year. However, Netflix CEO claims that its new show Narcos may have more viewers than Game of Thrones.
“We’re pleased to take the number two spot, but think it’s number one because they don’t measure all the devices,” Ted Sarandos said at the recently concluded UBS Global Media and Communications Conference in New York, referring to a recent survey which found that the streaming service would have the 2nd highest rated show if it was analyzed using traditional rating metrics- behind HBO’s Game of Thrones.
Netflix however, refrains from releasing viewership numbers for its shows and it is therefore hard to determine whether the claim by Sarandos is plausible or not. Narcos, released this year on the streaming service, was critically acclaimed and is steadily developing a strong fan following. But whether or not it has dethroned GOT, only time will tell.
Irrespective of the numbers, Netflix has constantly proven that it is on par with likes of HBO and FX with hit content like Master of None, House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, Jessica Jones etc. The company plans to double its original content production this year with 31 new series.
Narcos premiered on August 28, 2015, on Netflix and tells the real life story of drug kingpin Pablo Escobar, who founded the infamous Medellín Cartel in Colombia.
